The Assault Shadow Warrior Project

In the process of writing my Sexy Boot Overview (Shadow Warrior Guide) I decided to fully test the Assault Path and thought I might as well share my experience and observations with anyone interested.

Session 1 - Full Melee

I must admit that I had a lot of fun with my full melee Shadow Warrior,
but I have to warn you this is definitely not for everyone. I died nearly 200
times testing the Assault path in one weekend and I still need to test
Assault/Skirmish... In addition, this build can seriously tax healers and guards ( if
you have any, ) I actually made a macro to let healers know I was testing full melee
and cautioned them not to overwork themselves trying to keep me alive. I cannot honestly say that a full melee Shadow Warrior would be viable for the vast majority of players. ( more commentary... )

My biggest problem was with rdps, during testing I did put renown points into dodge and disrupt and that did seem to help, although I found combining spiritual resistance in block one and magical resistance in block two to be cheaper than spending the points for disrupt in block three. Higher weapon skill and initiative would also be a good choice, I was running at 196 and it was much too low. I also highly suggest using the moral 1 Concealment.

I absolutely love Exploit Weakness, in my opinion it is by far the best mastery ability in the tree; were it not so high in the tree I would definitely pick it up for my usual Scout/Assault build. Swift Strikes is now a part of my usual Scout/Assault build, I find the multiple attacks very useful for higher block/parry rated mdps and tanks. I had a lot of fun with Sweeping Slash and it came in quite handy with all those rubber armed
enemies out there. Between Counterstrike / Opportunistic Strike and Brutal Assault I was
able to keep the majority of my targets from doing too much damage to me. *Note: for testing purposes I attempted to limit my ranged ability usage to only Broadhead Arrow.

The damage was more than I expected and the surprise factor garnered me more than a few kills. Running 996 Strength and 538 Weapon Skill, Brutal Assault and Exploit Weakness both gave me semi- regular 1-1.5k hits, Swift Strikes was averaging 200-250 per strike, and Sweeping Slash was in the 200-250 range without Vengeance, Steady Aim, or Unshakeable Focus. Draw Blood ticked at around 150, Grim Slash was hitting for around 400. Counterstrike and Opportunistic Strike seemed to range quite a bit from 100-400, but between those and Brutal Assault I was able to keep quite a few targets from doing too much damage to me.

In my session 2 video I took on some of the "big boys" to get a better idea of the damage capabilities, the stats are exactly the same so you might want to check that out. Shintto is a RR80 Chosen in full Warlord. At the end is Axewoof, a RR80 full Tyrant S&B Black Guard, one of the best on the server; unfortunately, my liniment wore out and I didn't notice until it was too late. I had him down to 90% once... ;)

The Sinister Assault tactic is pretty much a must have. I was not happy with No Respite, but I did put a renown point into increased parry so it might be handy if you chose not to do that. I only ran out of action points a couple times, mostly when fighting higher renown rank tanks, so I did not take Merciless Soldier; although I've always had a knack for AP management so you may find it worth taking. My favorite tactic set was Sinister Assault, Expert Skirmisher, Wrist Slash, and Bullseye, though I found Pierce Defenses handy as well. ( hide commentary... )

Session 2 - Full Assault Stance

In this testing session I stayed in the same mastery training, renown training, and gear as I had during the full melee testing. Except this time I utilized all ranged abilities available in assault stance; this added Eagle Eye, Broadhead Arrow, Spiral Fletched Arrow, and Acid Arrow to the mix. This is the quintessential Shadow Warrior of lore; wearing the enemy down at range and moving into melee for the kill. I enjoyed this play style once I got a rhythm down; the key was in knowing when to move in for the kill and when to hang back. I believe this play style and build is absolutely viable. ( more commentary... )

Please read the melee commentary as almost all of it also applies to this build as well. The only thing I would like to add is that I believe mastery training in Skirmish, rather than Scout, would be more beneficial to this build. I elected not to change my mastery training because I knew I would be testing Assault/Skirmish. In this video I took on some of the "big boys" to get a better idea of the damage capabilities, Shintto is a RR80 Chosen in full Warlord. At the end is Axewoof, a RR80 full Tyrant S&B Black Guard, one of the best on the server; unfortunately, my liniment wore out and I didn't notice until it was too late. Session 3 - Stance Dancing Assault/Scout

In this testing session I introduced stance dancing between Scout and Assault and utilized all available ranged in the two; this added Flame Arrow, Throat Shot, Take Down, Rapid Fire, and Festering Arrow to the mix. I kept the same Assault mastery training as before and put 10 points into Scout. I changed both my renown training and gear to put slightly more emphasis on Ballistic than strength. Here again, this is the quintessential Shadow Warrior of lore; wearing the enemy down at range and moving into melee for the kill. This is definitely a viable build and play style, and in a couple more renown ranks I will definitely be playing my Shadow WE. ( more commentary... )

The gear changes and Scout stance enabled me to bring my Initiative up to 294 and this certainly helped with the rdps threats, with the moral 1 Concealment I had no more trouble with them than I usually do in a full Scout build.

With balancing strength and ballistic the damage on my assault abilities was a bit lower, around 10-20%. Ranged abilities took a pretty big hit from my perspective, but I usually run 1065-1085 ballistic. It felt like I was at around 40-50% lower damage, plus I didn't have EA so my Fester Bombs were in the 700-1k range. However, if you usually run around 1k Ballistic it should be about the same damage as you are used to.

Balancing Strength and Ballistic was a bit tricky as dps suffered greatly if I went too far on either side; you will want to play with this to get it to work with your gear. I opted for slightly more Ballistic than Strength to make Fester Arrow a worthwhile mastery pick. I did not have enough renown points to pick up Enchanted Arrows unfortunately, though I certainly would if I could.

Another thing I played around with was running Discerning Offence instead of Bullseye, this affected my dps quite a bit as you can see in some of the video clips. For tactics I favored Wrist Slash, Sinister Assault, Bullseye, and Steady Aim ( soon to be Masterful Aim, ) here again though Pierce Defenses was rather nice as well. ( hide commentary... )

Session 4 - Stance Dancing Assault/Skirmish

In this testing session I introduced stance dancing between Skirmish and Assault and utilized all available ranged in the two; this added Eye Shot, Lileath's Arrow, Shadow Sting, and Takedown to the mix. I dropped 1 point from Assault mastery training and put 11 points into Skirmish. Due to the close proximity of the enemy in Skirmish stance I found it worked best to put more emphasis on Strength than Ballistic. This is definitely a viable build and play style, although due to my priority to the enemy and a more assault focused play style I found it to be almost as hazardous as full melee was. ( more commentary... )

The best balance I found for the more assault focused play style was 918 Strength and 799 Ballistic, which gave me decent damage on both sides of the fence. One thing I did notice was that due to my play style being more melee focused and the proximity to the enemy I found myself in assault stance the vast majority of the time. I felt the skirmish stance bonuses with my lower ballistic were simply not enough to justify the loss of my armor and weapon skill bonus, plus Acid Arrow and my assault CC tools; Counterstrike, Opportunistic Strike, and even Whirling Pin (which relies on strength.) The loss of Takedown was only slightly annoying for this play style since I intended to close distance with my target anyway.

Lileath's Arrow had nice damage though I found it near impossible to use on the move due to its extremely narrow straight line of fire; I'd say that out of the fifty times I tried to use it while moving I only managed to hit anyone at all about 20 times. However, strafer's would probably be able to utilize this ability better than I was. Eyeshot's damage was decent and the initiative debuff came in handy when chasing down single targets, but Spiral Fletched Arrow was by far the king for utility and damage. Spiral-Fletched does nice single target damage and I found that the damage reduction from running Split Arrows was well mitigated by the AoE effect especially if you use Vengeance and Unshakeable Focus consistently.

I ran Steady Aim (soon to be Masterful Aim,) Expert Skirmisher, Wrist Slash, Bullseye, Pierce Defenses, and Split Arrows while testing and all seemed to work well with the build and play style. I felt Steady Aim was almost a requirement in order to devote more to my strength. Wrist Slash and Pierce Defenses were very handy to run when there were a lot of tanks to fight. Bullseye became a big liability when rdps were prevalent, but here again I was running with a lower Initiative. Expert Skirmisher fits in perfectly with this build. ( hide commentary... )
